  • Christmas Wishes
Will Father Christmas Be Kind to the Red Sox There are only a few days left before Christmas, I hope it is not too late to put my wish list in for the Sox this Christmas. 1. Will Santa please bring the Sox a starting catcher, I am not greedy Santa either through a trade or Varitek for a short contract will do 2. Please bring both Mike Lowell and David Ortiz healing that brings them the type of health they both deserve and the season that will result from that better health 3. Bring back the Ellsbury of 2007 rather than the one we saw down the stretch in 08 4. I would like a completely healed shoulder for Josh Beckett 5. A fast track for future Gold Glover Argenis Diaz so fans in Fenway will see what fans in the minor league parks have seen over the past couple of years 6. A Hall of Fame induction for Jim Rice, in his last year of eligibility, which will be well deserved There are several other gifts I would like to see Santa deliver as well to others involved in baseball: 1. A lump of coal for Scott Boras who continues to play on the greed of owners in MLB 2. Some more intestinal fortitude for politicians in New York so they can stand up to the Yankees demands for more public funds for their new stadium while they spend money on player salaries like there is no tomorrow 3. And as much as I enjoy the Red Sox success of recent years. Please bring some common sense to MLB owners so they can put a system in operation that allows for more competition I know this is a lot to ask for Santa but Sox fans have been good this year!!
  • The VWR is Conquered!
Well, yesterday was that day that all Sox fans look forward to each year. It was the day that tickets went on sale for the 2009 season. It is the day that you open as many browser windows as possible without your computer crashing and hope that when the VWR counts down from 30 to 0, you will be allowed into the system and have the opportunity to buy tickets for games in April and May. In the past I have sat in front of my computer for the entire day without any luck. Most of the times however after opening 40 or more windows I have after several hours made it past the first hurdle. So yesterday, I started to prepare about an hour or so before the 11 am ( Atlantic time) scheduled start. I had my PC and my laptop set up and while listening to WEEI proceeded to have 45 or so windows open for the 11 am start. Schockingly after just 5 minutes, this person was able to crack the VWR wall and was able to purchase box seats for Oriole games. Wow! I actually had a chance to enjoy the rest of the day here in Nova Scotia. Whether the power outages caused by the ice storms in New England helped my cause or not I don't know but it was the quickest I have ever gotten through the dreaded VWR. On other things, with the Winter Meetings over and the Yankees having added two top teir pitchers where do the Sox stand? If the Sox fail to sign Mark Teixeira will they be hard pressed to challenge for a playoff berth this season. In my mind both Lowell and Ortiz have questions surrounding them as they enter the new year so if I had Theo's money to spend I would make sure Teixeira is signed whatever it takes.
  • Winter Meetings, Etc.
Well everyone of you knows by now that Bill Lee's father passed a short while ago. The cancellation of our event at the first of November has left us with a lot of auction items in our possession and now we must go back to the drawing board to try and plan another event. In the survey I did with membership, the majority of you wanted us to try and reschedule an event that involved Bill in the new year. Please stay tuned for more news in this regard in the next few months. With baseball's winter meeting now half over, the dreaded team from the Bronx has landed C.C. Sabathia and are in the running as well for Lowe and Burnett. So far the Red Sox have been very quiet. Supposedly a few teams including Texas have offered catching possibilities for people like Buchholz or Bowden. The Sox are reluctant to make any deal involving these two so far. Interest in Varitek seems low so far with people like former Globe reporter Gordon Edes saying he expects to see him return to the Sox. The big prize the Sox are interested in of course is Mark Teixeira who is apparently looking for a 10 year deal. Doesn't Scott Boras know we are bordering on a economic depression??? No word on Manny yet, interest seems not to be as great as Boras predicted. By the end of the week maybe some of these things will be answered. The trade for Ramon Ramirez, I think will be a good one for the Sox and add another bridge to get to Papelbon. All our best to Coco in K.C.!! What a guy Pedroia is ,eh! Not only winning the A.L. MVP but agreeing to a long range deal with the Sox for a half dozen years at a reasonable price. Another thing to look for is can the Sox sign Papelbon and/or Youkilis to contract extensions. **** Just one othe thing before closing off, there is a new web site out there in Red Sox land that is worth checking out; SawksHeads.com. I will put it on our links page.
  • Bill Lee's Invite To Members!!!
Dear Bluenose BoSox Member, As official Chairman-for-Life of the Bluenose BoSox Brotherhood, I thought it was high time that I showed up for an audience with my Canadian comrades. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing you all on November 1st at Boston Pizza, Dartmouth Crossing, for an evening of fun and nostalgia. Tickets are just $10.00 per person and each member can bring up to three guests. I promise to be as intelligent as Barrack Obama, as experienced as John McCain, as forceful as Joe Biden and as wacky as Sarah Palin. As many of you know, after my playing days with the Red Sox and Expos I played baseball for the Moncton Mets and the Sydney Sooners, so in many ways this will be a homecoming for me. They call me "Spaceman" but I'm really a pretty down to earth guy. I have played baseball all over the earth - in Russia, China, Cuba, and across Canada. Someday I hope to pitch on Mars where fastballs don't matter and you have to get by on your skill. I know that there are tons of Red Sox and Expos fans in Nova Scotia and I would love to talk about both of my former major league teams, about my "good times in the Maritimes," about the state of baseball and the state of the world. The fun starts at 5:00 pm with a social hour and a silent auction. Proceeds will go to the IWK Children's Hospital and minor baseball, two causes dear to my heart. After we have some pizza, I'll be happy to sign autographs. Then I'll astound you with my eloquence for awhile and answer any questions you might have. No subject is taboo: politics, steroids, Canada-US relations, my best-selling books and blockbuster movies - you name it. Come armed with questions. Some suggestions: Do Don Zimmer and I keep in touch? Does he really resemble a gerbil? What were my first impressions of Fenway Park? Can a southpaw succeed there? Why is Graig Nettles not on my Christmas card list? How many times did I beat the Yankees? What was the Boston Massacre and what was my role, or non role, in it? Who the heck is Stan Papi anyway? How did I single-handedly end the curse of the Bambino? Is Yaz really the worst dresser in baseball history? Why did Fisk sometimes throw the ball back to the mound harder than I pitched it? Why did I throw the blooper pitch to Tony Perez in Game Seven of the 1975 World Series? Who was the toughest hitter I faced? Why did the Expos fail as a franchise? What does it mean to me to be elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame? How do you like the current Red Sox? With all their talent, why couldn't the Red Sox teams of your era win it all? Clemens or Pedro, who was better? Rice or Big Papi? Fisk or Varitek? I look forward to renewing old friendships and making new ones. See you all on November 1st at Boston Pizza, Dartmouth Crossing! Tickets to this event are limited and are expected to go fast. As a benefit of your membership in the BBB you have first crack at tickets before we open it up to the general public. After October 12th, tickets will be available to those outside the BBB, so be sure to act quickly. Don't delay! Don't miss out! YOUR NEXT STEPS 1.
