"This is about fire prevention, because every fire that is prevented is one less that the fire company has to put out and the insurance company has to pay," said Mayor Giuliano, as he addressed the kids and the audience of parents, grandparents and fire department personel. "So there are many good reasons for preventing fires, but the best resaon is because it keeps people safe."
Here's Mayor G, talking with his hands!! The students seemed really excited about meeting him, and he admitted to being pretty excited about the fact that three of them were from St. Sebastian, his elementary school alma mater.
Owen Stevenson, in the black sweatshirt, told me that he was writing about fire trucks when he decided to draw one on his poster.
"Then, we saw a movie on a house burning, so I put that on my poster too, and made it really colorful," he said.
Owen, who keeps an emergency ladder in his bedroom in case of fire, said his family has an emergency exit plan in place and plenty of smoke detectors.
Not only do Nicole and Lauren Godbout attend the same school, but they sit next to each other in the same classroom, are good friends outside of school and both ended up being winners of the poster contest.
Nicole's creation, which took first place for fifth grade, depicts a burning candle in a window that has caught a nearby curtain on fire.
"There is a smoke alarm that is sad because it needs batteries," said Nicole, who credits her mother for the theme of her poster.
