Tracy Rhyne, Mother of 3 now a quadriplegic. Her story was also featured on ABC’s 20/20. The windshield which was improperly installed came out when her family’s mini van rolled over.

Maya Donnett, Age 45, featured in the Detroit News. She became a quadriplegic when the Chevy Cavalier she rented rolled over in an accident. The replaced windshield came out causing roof crush that broke her neck.

How many other victims are there? That is unknown, without disrespect to first responders; police, fire rescue personnel and EMTs, their priority is saving lives. But due to many times that fact, I understand evidence is lost.

What is known is that many windshield replacements are done incorrectly. ABC's 20/20 in February, 2000 reported an estimate nationally that 7 out of 10, were faulty. News reports since then have continued to show this trend. Among them, Fox Undercover in Denver, February 2005, had issues with all installations. One replacement was done with the wrong adhesive. In the spring of 2006, the Speaker Of The House in Louisiana, conducted an investigation and found it common to have defective windshield replacements. 

Don't think it happens in Oklahoma? Think again, last year (2006) I heard of 3 instances of windshields coming out of vehicles. Of these, one popped out while the vehicle traveled down I-35, striking the vehicle behind it. In an accident another vehicle's windshield was blown out by the deployment of an airbag, it landed 20 to 25 feet in front of the auto. Finally, since the beginning of 2007 I know of 3 windshield installations that the windshield came loose. Below is a picture taken February 2007, of a vehicle that had it's windshield replaced just 2 to 3 weeks earlier.

In Oklahoma there is no regulations as to who installs a windshield. No training is required. The consumer is on their own and that is why this blog was created. Please use this blog to learn about windshield replacement for you, your family and friends safety.

The above car had it's windshield installed 3 weeks before it was in an accident in February of 2007, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. As you see just like in the video it didn't hold and the airbag hadn't been deployed. Most likely if the airbag had deployed against the windshield the result would have been the same.
