MPHS girls (0-1) play basketball at Cedar Rapids Prairie tonight, KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will have the varsity action beginning at 6:30 p.m.
UNI football team hosts Maine in the first round of the football playoffs Saturday, KILJ-FM 105.5 has the action beginning at 2;35 p.m.
Iowa State basketball on KILJ-AM 1130 Saturday.
IHSAA Announces Wrestling, Basketball
Hall-of-Fame Classes for 2009
Hall of fame classes to be honored at the Iowa High School Athletic Association's State Wrestling and State Basketball Tournaments later this year have been announced.
One coach and four former wrestlers will be honored during the 5:45 p.m. Awards segment prior to the championship matches at the State Wrestling Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 21 in Wells Fargo Arena.
Those being inducted are Royce Duncan, coach at Pleasant Valley, and former state champions Bruce Kinseth of Decorah; Kevin Dresser of Humboldt, Paul Weltha of Ames, and Lee Fullhart of Decorah.
Three coaches and six former players will enter the IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame, Saturday, March 14.
Those individuals include retired coaches Carl Cochran of Tri-Center, Neola; Jerry Slykhuis of Cedar Falls, and Postville's Paul Jungblut. Former players being honored include Bill Francis of Palmer; Roger Dutton of Boone; Craig Douma, Maurice-Orange City; Russ Millard, Cedar Rapids Washington; Loren Meyer of Ruthven; and Todd Sears from Ankeny.

I have good news and bad news. First the good, the MPHS girls were leading Muscatine 34-13 at halftime. Now the bad news Muscatine won the game 55-49. Panthers were led in scoring by Janel Barnes with 13 points and Amanda Dunn added 12. Muscatine won the jv game, 45-37.
Next action for the 13th ranked Panthers is a trip to Cedar Rapids Prairie Friday night. Look out #1 ranked Lin-Mar you are next on the Muscatine schedule.

Brett Humpal 6-4 senior forward for the IWC Tiger men has been named the Midwest Collegiate conference player of the week. He averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals in the three games he played last week.
The player of the week for women was Ali Dolphin of St. Ambrose who averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds in two games last week.

The Henry County Boys basketball jamboree was held last night in Winfield. Waco defeated New London in the first half of action 31-20 and Mt. Pleasant scored a 50-26 win over the host Wolves in the nightcap.
The MPHS girls open the 2008-2009 season tonight on the road at Muscatine in non-conference play. The Panthers are expecting to have a very successful season as they return a lot of talent from last year and bring in some underclassmen who look to be able to adjust to varsity ball and contribute in the ball handling and scoring department. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will broadcast live beginning at 7:30 tonight.
The New London - FS/Var G BB that was scheduled for Monday @ Notre Dame has been moved to tonight at 6pm. (11/25)
And the New London Fall Athletic Banquet has been postponed indefinitely.

Jaren Maybin (Jr.-Baltimore, Md.) and Lawrence Moore (So.-Country Club Hills, Ill.) became the first Iowa Wesleyan College football players in four years to receive first team all-league honors when the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League released its all-league team on Friday.
Maybin and Moore gave IWC multiple first team All-MSFA selections for the first time since 2002. The two also combined with Second Team All-MSFA Midwest defensive back Gerald Knighten (Jr.-Bellwood, Ill.) to give IWC three players combined on the first and second teams for the first time since 1999.

The MPHS basketball team is ranked 13th in the first poll of girls basketball teams compiled by the IGHSAU. Ballard holds down the top ranking. In class 1A Springville is #1 and New London 10th, Highland 14th. Class 2A top ranked team is MFL, Mediapolis is 14th. The top ranked 4A team is Lin-Mar.
IWC Kiwanis Classic was held Friday and Saturday, Friday the Tigers fell to Briar Cliff 86-76, Bret Humpal scored 18 points. Saturday Bethel defeated the Tigers 84-68, the is ranked #2 in the nation in NAIA Division Two basketball.
Brett Humpal scored 22 points, six rebounds and 8 assists. The 6'4" senior from Decorah made the all tournament team for the third straight year. Wesleyan will go to Hannibal LaGrange Saturday.
IWC women went to a tournament in Sterling, Kansas. The host school beat the Tigers Friday night 87-53, Heather Larson led the scoring with 11 points. Wesleyan bounced back Saturday to win over Tabor College 79-59, leading 43-31 at halftime. Brittany Okland had 15 poionts, Sherry Zehner dropped in 13, Heather Larson and Anna Jones added 12 each, Megan Couch put in 11.
MPHS boys basketball team plays in the Henry County Basketball Jamboree in Winfield tonight. Panthers will play a half of basketball against WMU at 7:45 p.m. New London and Waco battle at 7 p.m.

Second annual IWC girls basketball jamboree last night saw ten area teams battle in a half of basketball. Mt. Pleasant out scored L-M 37-21, Holy Trinity Catholic 26 WMU 14, New London 23 Mediapolis 19, Waco 40 Columbus Community 20. Harmony and Wapello also participated. Here the area coaches talk on a special coaches corner Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
Mt. Pleasant opens the regular season at Muscatine Tuesday, WMU plays at W. Liberty tonight. Iowa City High is at Burlington and Ft. Madison at Davenport Central this evening also.
IWC Kiwanis basketball classic is tonight and tomorrow at Olan G. Ruble Arena. In first round action tonight it's Hannibal LaGrange against Bethel at 5:30 p.m. The host Tigers play Briar Cliff at 7:30 p.m.
Wesleyan will play Bethel tomorrow and HLG will play Briar Cliff.
Midwest Collegiate conference volleyball all conference selections have been made. Iowa Wesleyan had two palyers make honorable mention. B.J. Wagy and Kendra Zimmerman. Player of the year was Sheila Mercado of William Penn, coach of the year was Jeremy Wise of William Penn.
Iowa defeated The Citadel in basketball on the road last night 70-48, Anthony Tucker scored 21.
The IHSAA State Football Championships begin today. 8 man championship at 10:30 this morning has Armstrong Ringsted vs Lenox, Class A at 2 p.m. has North Tama vs Southern Cal, 7:05 p.m. the 4A championship will have Cedar Falls vs Valley of W. Des Moines. Saturday class 1A opens play at 10:30 with Emmetsburg vs West Lyon. 2A championship has Central Lyon vs Solon, at 4 p.m. S.C. Heelan plays Decorah at 4 p.m.
Football on KILJ-FM Saturday UNI at Southern Utah 12:30, Iowa at Minnesota at 5:30. KILJ-AM 1130 has Iowa St. at Kansas St. 12:30 p.m.

The second annual Iowa Wesleyan College high School girls basketball jamboree is going to be held tonight at the Olan G. Ruble Arena beginning at 6 p.m. with 10 area teams participating. Columbus will tangle with Waco in the first half of action followed by New London vs Mediapolis, WMU vs Holy trinity, Mt. Pleasant vs L-M and the final half has Wapello vs Harmony. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students and under school age free.
The Midwest Collegiate Conference has named their all conference teams for soccer. For the women IWC had two players named to honorable mention, Karly york and Jillian Sulcer. Player of the year was Ashley Sorenson of Viterbo and the coach of the year was Jon Mannall of St. Ambrose.
For the men, IWC had one player on the honorable mention list, Jacob Pilger. Player of the year was Greg Lehman of St. Ambrose, coach of the year was Blair Reid of Grandview.
On KILJ-FM 105.5 tonight hear the Iowa Hawkeyes as they play at the Citadel, airtime is 5 p.m.

The IWC women and men hosted Culver Stockton College in basketball last night in Olan G. Ruble Arena. The Tiger women won 89-57 after leading 40-29 at halftime. Brittany Okland scored 16 points, Rachel Mitchell and Megan Couch tossed in 11 points each to help the local team event heir record at 2-2.
The Wesleyan men rolled to a 78-58 win, after leading at halftime 40-29. The Tigers hit 13 three poiont field goals and had five players in double figures. Josh Hogue scored 14, Jason Garber and Jared Callanan scored 12 each.
