Troubled airline Alitalia could be relaunched within a month thanks to a government rescue package, according to reports. The airline, which is the national carrier of Italy, looked as if it could be headed for oblivion before an agreement was reached on a deal that will see it receive some 2 billion (£1.56 billion) in government funding. There are likely to be a number of changes to Alitalia's operations, however, with its network substantially reduced and one in three jobs likely to be cut, Travel Weekly reports. After merging with domestic carrier Air One, Alitalia is expected to drop many of its long-haul routes and focus on domestic and medium-haul services. The Italian government has reportedly been seeking an outside buyer to help Alitalia recover from its financial problems for over two years.Air France and Lufthansa are both in the frame to buy a stake of up to 25 per cent in the airline and use Rome, Milan or possibly both as hub airports.Cheap Flights and Travel News - © 2008 - Just The Flight - "Surge" in flight bookings with Atol members
The recent collapses of companies such as Zoom Airlines and XL Leisure have led to a "surge" in bookings with members of the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (Atol) scheme, according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito).Derek Moore, chairman of Aito, said that tour operators, unlike airlines, offer complete security to their customers."Airlines are always going to come and go, that's a fact of the airline industry, there will always be airlines going bust
because they work on fairly tight margins," he commented.Mr Moore said that the collapse of XL and Zoom showed consumers the value of booking with a tour operator. He added: "This is the time when money may be tight for some people and there is a lot of economic uncertainty, make sure your holiday is protected and book with a recognisable tour operator."According to the Office for National Statistics, UK residents made around 17.8 million trips abroad in the three months to July this year. Both North America and Europe saw an increase of two per cent in the number of UK visitors in this period, according to the figures.Cheap Flights and Travel News - © 2008 - Just The Flight - International passengers boost Orlando traffic

Visitors to Iceland will soon be treated to two impressive light shows in the country - one man-made and the other entirely natural. On October 9th, Yoko Ono will visit Reykjavik to relight the Imagine Peace Tower that was created to pay tribute to her late husband John Lennon. The tower emits a 20-metre high beam of white light that will be visible across Reykjavik from October 9th, Lennon's birthday, to December 8th, the date of his death.Visitors can reach Videy Island, the location of the tower, on ferries from Reykjavik's Skarfabakki pier, which depart every day at 20:00.Another light show that tourists in Iceland may get the chance to enjoy from October to March is the Northern Lights, which is sometimes visible on clear starry nights when the temperature is below zero degrees Celsius. The likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights increases with proximity to the North Pole, meaning that there are locations in northern Canada that offer a good chance of seeing the phenomenon.Cheap Flights and Travel News - © 2008 - Just The Flight - Tourism 'must grow smartly'
