  • Luton Airport 'no 1 for passenger growth'
    Luton Airport has claimed that its traffic figures for the first nine months of the year make it the number one airport in the UK for passenger growth.Statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority show that Luton Airport handled 487,311 more passengers between January and September this year than in 2007, representing an increase of 6.5 per cent.This growth has been fuelled by the launch of new routes to destinations in Cyprus, Italy, Poland and Jersey.Glyn Jones, managing director of Luton Airport, said: "We have achieved this position due to our excellent transport links to London, the south-east and the Midlands as well as having one of the best airport catchment areas in the UK."This has been an encouraging year for us and shows just how attractive London Luton Airport now is to airlines and travellers alike."A number of major airlines fly from Luton Airport, including Flybe, Aer Arann and easyJet, to more than 95 destinations in Europe, Africa and other regions.The airport handled nearly ten million passengers in 2007, representing growth of close to 400 per cent over the course of ten years.Cheap Flights and Travel News - © 2008 - Just The Flight
  • Record month for Birmingham Airport
    Birmingham Airport has announced that it saw its busiest November on record last month, with a total of 620,283 passengers using its two terminals.The overall traffic figure comprised 527,727 scheduled travellers and 92,556 people on charter flights, representing a total increase of 1.6 per cent on November 2007.Paul Kehoe, chief executive officer of Birmingham Airport, said the record month was "great news", particularly in light of the current economic conditions.He added: "The airport continues to perform above the national average, with figures once again looking likely to be considerably down across the majority of other UK airports."However, the outlook for the coming months looks challenging for the entire industry and we cannot expect Birmingham to be immune to the economic slowdown."A number of scheduled flight destinations from Birmingham Airport saw passenger growth in November, including Alicante, Prague and Dubai.This month will see Turkish Airlines launching new direct flights from Birmingham Airport to Istanbul.Cheap Flights and Travel News - © 2008 - Just The Flight
  • Michelin guide to Hong Kong published
    Holidaymakers planning culinary trips to Hong Kong can now make use of a new Michelin guide to the city.The publication, which was released last week, also covers Macau and represents Michelin's expanding coverage of Asia.More than 30 different types of cuisine feature in the guide, which lists a total of 202 eating establishments – 169 hotels and 33 hotels.Only one restaurant in Hong Kong, Lung Hing Keen, received three Michelin stars, a rating which means it serves "exceptional cuisine" and is worth a "special journey".A number of eateries were given two stars, including T'ang Court, Shang Palace, Caprice, Bo Innovation and Amber.When assessing restaurants, Michelin takes into account a number of criteria, including product quality, preparation and flavours, value for money and consistency.As well as reading about the city's top dining establishments, users of the Michelin guide to Hong Kong can make use of a section on restaurants that offer fine dining at affordable prices.Cheap Flights and Travel News - © 2008 - Just The Flight
  • Brussels Airlines to be part of Star Alliance
    The chief executives of the airlines belonging to Star Alliance have voted to accept the application of Brussels Airlines to join the coalition.Brussels Airlines operates around 300 daily flights to 55 airports in Europe and 15 destinations in Africa.Bernard Gustin, the airline's managing director, said that the company was "very happy" with the result and looked forward to bringing Star Alliance advantages to its customers.Glenn Tilton, chief executive of United Airlines, who chaired the board meeting to decide on Brussels Airlines' application, said: "Brussels Airlines further strengthens the Star Alliance by offering greater connectivity throughout Europe and Africa to better serve the international travel needs of all our customers."The Belgian carrier will be assisted in its integration into Star Alliance by Lufthansa.Brussels Airlines passengers are expected to see a number of benefits as a result of this development, including access to "seamless" connections across the Star Alliance network of 1,074 destinations.Cheap Flights and Travel News - © 2008 - Just The Flight
  • New InterContinental hotel to open in Melbourne
    In the latest in a number of tourist developments in Melbourne, Australia, a new InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) property will open its doors in the city this month.IHG announced that its AU$60 million (£26.3 million) "resurrection" of the Rialto heritage hotel is virtually complete and the establishment will be welcoming guests from December 15th.InterContinental Melbourne the Rialto is located in Melbourne's financial district, in one of the few remaining examples of 19th century gothic architecture to be found in the city.The new property joins the InterContinental Paris Le Grand, the InterContinental Sydney and others in the chain's collection of heritage-listed hotels and resorts.Manrique Rodriguez, general manager of the Rialto, said: "Under the InterContinental brand, this hotel presents a rare opportunity to make the sumptuous mythology of Melbourne accessible to generations of discerning international travellers specifically seeking genuinely local experiences of each destination they visit.
