- UMass Hockey Takes Consolation Game Of Dartmouth Tournament With 4-1 Win Over Army
The UMass Hockey team won the consolation game of the Dartmouth Ledyard National Bank Classic with a 4-1 victory over Army on Monday afternoon. The Minutemen received two goals from Will Ortiz and a goal and two assists from Casey Wellman. Dan Meyers got the start in goal for UMass, making 16 saves. Josh Kassel started in goal for Army, making 27 saves in the loss. The Minutemen will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they will host No. 10 Cornell at the Mullins Center. The UMass hockey team (8-7-1) fell to Bemidji State 4-2 Sunday afternoon in the first game of the Dartmouth Ledyard National Bank Classic. The Minutemen received goals from Cory Quirk and Justin Braun, while Paul Dainton made 14 saves in goal for UMass. Matt Dalton got the start in goal for the Beavers (8-7-0), making 24 saves. The Minutemen will be in action tomorrow afternoon in the consolation game against Army which lost on Sunday night 5-4 in overtime to Dartmouth. Coming off a two-week break, UMass heads to Dartmouth for the Ledyard National Bank Classic on Sunday, Dec. 28 and Monday, Dec. 29. The Minutemen will face Bemidji State on Sunday at 4 PM before taking on either host Dartmouth or Army on Monday (4/7 PM). Bemidji State currently sits atop the College Hockey America conference standings, while Dartmouth is tied for third in the ECAC and Army is eighth in the Atlantic Hockey Conference. UMass has won two straight games and is coming off a five-game home stand before heading out on the road for the first time in over a month. - Jon Quick To Start For L.A. For the second straight game, former UMass All-American netminder Jon Quick will start in goal for the L.A. Kings on Tuesday night at the Columbus Blue Jackets. Quick has played in two games for the Kings this season with a 4.68 goals-against-average, an .860 save percentage and an 0-1-0 record. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports West and Fox Sports Ohio. Darren Rowe, Colin Shea and Peter DeAngelo have all signed early period National Letters of Intent to join the UMass men's ice hockey program as announced by head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon on Tuesday. The trio joins Eric Filiou and Anthony Raiola who signed last spring but have deferred enrollment until 2009-10 in order to continue their development with their respective junior hockey teams. "So far it is really turning into a very solid class that will be coming to campus over the next two years," said Cahoon. Former UMass standout Marvin Degon has been nominated to compete in the DEL (German Elite League) Team America vs. Team Europe All-Star Game in Berlin, Germany and fans can vote online to help select the former Minuteman to the team. The UMass hockey team headed into the holiday break with a shutout win over American International Friday night, 4-0. The Minutemen received goals from four different players, including a shorthanded goal from Justin Braun and a power play goal from Chris Davis.
