I welcome you to another DeSoto County Fair; a place of good, clean family entertainment and fun. With your help we will have another banner year! Last year we broke many old records. Our attendance was great; our share from the midway proceeds was up and the livestock sales totaled $224,000.00, far exceeding previous years. Add to that the proceeds from the resale and feed purchases bought locally, the economic impact to the community was up over previous years also. As a result of your support we were able to pay more and better premiums to the kids. This past year 10 scholarships were awarded, 9 at the awards night at DHS and 1 held for Miss DeSoto until her senior year. Nearly 100% of our kitchen sales and half of our 50/50 ticket sales go into scholarships for our graduating seniors, so we ask you to support these efforts while visiting your County Fair. In keeping with our community-mindedness and community support philosophies it was our pleasure once again this year to provide our grounds free of charge in support of the Arcadia Rodeo Association, the Arcadia Saddle ClubTMs Quadrille, Shoot Out Gang, Arcadia Watermelon Pageant, Boy Scouts, DeSoto Memorial Hospital, DCYAA Football and Baseball, the Florida SheriffTMs Youth Ranches Summer Day Camp, the Sophomore and Junior Classes Home Coming Float construction and a pre-designated Emergency assembly area. In addition to the grounds the FairTMs total parking revenue of $9,504.00 was donated to the DeSoto County High School Sophomore and Junior Classes in support of their Junior and Senior Prom. In 1975, the Florida Legislature created the Florida State Fair Authority and designated the annual event in Tampa as the official Florida State Fair. “Nowhere But the Fair” can folks enjoy such a distinctive mix of thrilling rides, rockinTM concerts, delectable Fair foods, amazing animals, and much more! For more than 100 years the Florida State Fair has been hosting competitions for the residents of Florida to showcase their livestock, produce, and artistic items. What started as a small, agricultural fair in a place now known as Dadeland, has grown into one of the countrys largest and most successful fairs. The Miami Dade County Fair & Exposition, Inc. is a private not-for-profit corporation governed by a volunteer board of directors. In its mission, the organization is dedicated to enriching our community by promoting education and South Florida agriculture while showcasing and rewarding youth achievement. It is accomplished by producing a first-class Fair with quality entertainment providing facilities and resources for year-round events.

The Sonoma-Marin Fair draws more than 60,000 attendees over five days. Of those, 38% are over 13 years old; 24% are children 12 and under; 2% are seniors. These fairgoers enjoy family-style and spectacular full-size carnival rides, a separate section of fun and colorful kiddie carnival rides, headliner entertainment nightly, livestock exhibits, home and fine arts exhibits, wine tasting of award-winning wines from our North of the Gate Wine Competition, the World Champion Ugly Dog Competition, a Talent Show, and much, much more.

The tide of fun was high as more than one million visitors joined the stampede to the annual OC Fair, setting an attendance record of more than 1,090,000. Visitors to the 2008 Jackson County Fair can stroll through the Buyers Marketplace where more than one hundred thirty vendors will be selling their wares, demonstrating a product or sharing information. The Buyers Marketplace is located inside Compton Arena and under the many colorful canopies scattered throughout the grounds. Satellite dishes, spas, cell phones, antiques, jewelry, crafts, health and nutritional products, beauty aids, hats, clothing, kitchenware, home improvement and decorating accessories are just a sampling of the array of merchandise. Pitchmen will be slicing and dicing, cooking, and demonstrating the fun of the childrens block that appeals to kids of all ages. Fair goers can obtain information on insurance and financial opportunities, and legal, political, health and community issues. Naval recruiters will be present to talk to young men and women interested in the military service. Churches and service groups will also be on hand to share their messages. The more adventurous can climb the wall and ride the mechanical bull. The Rogue Valley Co-op will be introducing their new state-of-the-art fire safety house which teaches children how to evacuate a burning building safely. The Co-op will also have many hands on activities for children and their families. To remember their visit to the fair, families and friends can dress up in old western fashion and have their photo taken at the old time photo booth.
