  • Homeowners Forced Out Because Of Lake Harbour Expansion

David Webb is getting ready to move out of the house he and his wife Janet moved into just after they got married 34 years ago.

"It's just a sad situation, you lose your home after 30 years and it's paid for and you have to start all over."

Webb's home along with some of his neighbors’ will be bulldozed to make way for a wider road.

His home is located on Lake Harbour Drive in Ridgeland, which the city plans to expand from three to five lanes to relieve traffic.

The cost of the expansion is about $16 million dollars.

Federal funding will pay for most of that, but Ridgeland has to come up with part of the money to compensate and relocate 14 homeowners who are in the way of this progress.

Three years ago when the city first announced expansion plans for Lake Harbour, Webb had just spent $30,000 remodeling his home.

"You know all that's gone down the drain because we thought this was going to be our home until we passed away you know."

Webb says he knows there is nothing he can do to stop the city from taking his house, but he has hired a lawyer to make sure he is properly compensated for the place he has called home fore more than three decades.

Mayor Gene McGee says homeowners forced to move will be well taken care of.

"We'll he says that, we just hope he sticks to his word," Webb says.

  • MDOT Urges Caution During Winter Weather Threat
The Mississippi Department of Transportation urges motorists to drive with caution today if you have to travel.  As wintry weather approaches the state, motorists should use extreme caution while traveling on interstates and bridges.   According to the National Weather Service, a winter weather advisory will continue today through 6 p.m.  A mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain is possible today which may cause travel difficulties.   Accumulations of snow are expected for southeast Mississippi.    MDOT personnel throughout the state are monitoring the weather and will take whatever measures are necessary to keep Mississippi roadways safe. If precipitation occurs, freezing rain may accumulate on bridges and overpasses.    Motorists are urged to call MDOT traffic information hotline for road conditions.  The number is 1-866-521-MDOT (6368).   MDOT encourages all motorists to buckle up for safety, drive carefully, stay alert and slow down especially when traveling in wintry winter.
  • Governor Barbour to Host Childhood Obesity Summit
Gov. Haley Barbour and officials with Mississippi Department of Education will host a Dec. 17 event in Jackson to examine ways to prevent childhood obesity.       Mississippi has one of the highest rates of obesity in the nation.       The event will bring together experts in education and health care to discuss ways of improving the health of children statewide. Barbour says by teaching the lessons of healthy eating, Mississippians can lower the rate of obesity-related diseases in the state.       Topics will range from learning how to provide a healthy environment to child nutrition.       David Katz, director and founder of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, will be the other keynote speaker.
  • Winter Storm Watch for Mississippi
A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for Jackson and most of central and south Mississippi through Thursday afternoon. A large storm is expected to move across the northern Gulf of Mexico and into Alabama Wednesday night and Thursday. This will initially bring widespread rain to the Arklamiss but as things cool off late tonight the rain will begin to mix with snow.  Along and southeast of the Natchez Trace rain should start to change completely over to snow early Thursday morning and persist through a good portion of the day. Snow will be moderate at times likely leading to accumulations even if surface temperatures are still a few degees above freezing. At this time snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are likely and there is a good chance that a line of heavier snow will develop which would lead to greater snow accumulations. In addition to the risk of accumulating snow, winds will be rather strong. Sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts will cause visibility problems. Wind speeds of that magnitude combining with moderate to heavy snow could cause visibilities to fall to a quarter of a mile or less leading to very hazardous travel conditions. This will have to be watched closely.
